Apologizing 101
At some point, we all need to say "I'm sorry". Here's what to do, and what NOT to do
Good morning, class.
Here’s how not to apologize for something you, your team, your department or your campus did wrong:
Because when it’s too defensive, too elusive, or appears disingenuous, this is how the public and media reacts:
So, in review, let’s make sure we all understand something, class:
Admit you were wrong.
Then, apologize for the mistake.
After that, you can ask for forgiveness - but don’t be offended if it isn’t given immediately.
Then, demonstrate your contrition by giving something back to the people you hurt over and above what is expected.
After that, thank the person/group/community when they tell you you’re forgiven, reaffirming that you won’t make the mistake again, and explain how the situation has changed you.
Don’t make the same mistake again.
At some point in your college coaching career, you’re going to make a mistake. How you handle it, once you’re called-out on it, is going to determine how you are remembered.
Class dismissed.
