Whenever we teach coaches to go hard after recruits, and prepare them for saying ‘yes’, the question always comes up:
“I don’t want to rush this and get a kid that’s going to be a bad fit for our team.”
Completely fair concern.
The same concern you’d have when you hear me talking about offering a scholarship or roster spot before they visit campus, or - for some Division I programs now faced with a drastically reduced recruiting timeline - offering a scholarship on the first phone call with a new prospect.
So many things can go wrong.
Which brings us to Antonio Brown…
From Day One, what a fiasco. Exactly what college coaches are trying to avoid.
And yet, how many of you would roll the dice and take the chance on program-changing talent?
No advice, just curious which side of the coin you land on as a coach:
Do you take a pass on unbelievable talent?
Or, do you take a chance, see if you can work with a prospect to get them to fall in line with your expectations, and reap the program-changing benefits?
Comment below.
I’d roll the dice and see what happens.
