Recruiting: Learned Skill or Natural Talent?
College coaches aren't just 'born' knowing how to recruit. Here's where they can get a crash course in advanced recruiting and learn to be great at it
One of the coaches I’ve admired most over the last decade is someone you probably haven’t heard of. Probably because he was fired three years into his first big head coaching job.
In his words, here’s what happened:
“I came into this opportunity I had dreamed about, and felt I had totally mastered the X’s and O’s part of the job. What I quickly found out was that my job - and really any college coach’s job - lives and dies with recruiting, and really understanding how to do it. That’s why I went to my first conference three years ago, and that’s why I’m coming again this year.”
That conference he mentioned is the National Collegiate Recruiting Conference, being held inside Duke University’s Wallace Wade Stadium, July 14-16.
What makes it so unique is that it’s the only event for college coaches dedicated to teaching them how to communicate more effectively with the prospects that could determine the course of their collegiate coaching careers. And the best part? It’s their fellow coaches stepping onto the stage and sharing their secrets when it comes to effective, creative recruiting techniques:
What recruiting skills are coaches wanting to learn about?
Coaches tell us, year after year, what new skill sets they’re wanting to learn with a new recruiting year approaching. Here’s the feedback we’re hearing from the coaches who have registered early for this year’s NCRC:
How should coaching staffs effectively approach the new recruiting contact rules just instituted by the NCAA?
What social media should coaches be using, and how much does it affect a recruit’s final decision?
How are coaches using the transfer portal to build their roster?
Why do some coaches seem to have stories that stand out to recruits more than others, and how can I get my top prospects’ attention?
What are college athletic directors looking for in head coaches they’re looking to hire?
When should I bring a recruit to campus, and how do I make the most of their time with my team?
Those are just some of the advanced topics that our 20+ speakers will discuss with our group of motivated, next-level college coaches who will be gathering to become better recruiters at NCRC 2020.
Timelines are changing: How do coaches manage them?
One of the major topics our speakers will be talking about are timelines:
Recruits are being asked to make their decisions more and more quickly, and that is affecting how coaches are recruiting them. Or at least it should.
We’re going to be digging into what timelines are going to be looking like as we head into 2020-2021, and outlining the strategies that have already started working for coaches around the country.
For a preview of the type of content we’ll be teaching coaches, click here for our recent article on this critical topic.
Learning these skills isn’t expensive:
Coaches can attend this massive three day event, hear all the speakers, network with peers from around the country, and get all the video of every speaker after it’s over, for just $179 for an individual coach, saving $100 off the regular price through March 31, 2020. There are other discounts for staffs, as well as entire departments (click here for all the discounted packages and options).
We intentionally design this annual event as a low cost, information rich learning opportunity for coaches who feel like they need to learn advanced skills that they’ve never been taught. And what we’ve been able to put together, year after year, is a labor of love for the coaches we serve. It’s not a money-maker for Tudor Collegiate Strategies, and our speakers volunteer their time and expertise to come and help coaches get better at this vital aspect of their jobs as college coaches.
Take advantage of this annual event yourself, or at least make sure you have a representative from your coaching staff or department attending so they can bring back all the data and information we’ll be highlighting at NCRC 2020 this summer.
Want an example of the expertise on display at NCRC?
What we cover are advanced recruiting strategies designed to take programs to a new level. One coach who will be making his third straight appearance is Jayson Schmidt, one of the rising coaches in college recruits.
To get an idea of what kind of content that NCRC covers, we’re giving coaches free access to one the talks Coach Schmidt has done - it was one of the most popular talks that year, and helped coaches use technology in ways they hadn’t thought about before:
I hope you’re a part of this summer’s event at Duke!
It’s going to be great, and one of my favorite parts is just being able to take the time to talk to coaches, answer questions and host this one-of-a-kind event for coaches.
I like going to coaching conventions, and feel like they’re a valuable part of a coach’s ongoing professional development. But there’s nothing like the National Collegiate Recruiting Conference. Coaches come here to learn advanced techniques and strategies, and we don’t disappoint…this event has made an incredible difference for coaching staffs around the country, and we want your’s to be next.
